Heading to this year’s Electric Picnic? Pack the rain jackets, sun cream and woolly socks… We’re promised all sorts of weather!
As thousands of revellers head to Stradbally, we’ve prepared our Electric Picnic Survival Guide to get you through the weekend in one piece.
1. Establish a Base
Don’t camp by the stage, a walkway, or at the bottom of a hill (in case of mudslides). If you can see a stage your in the danger zone.
Walking through the camp site you’ll spot the newbies from a mile away.
The young ones new to the festival scene with their excited faces nursing their warm cans who think they’ve cheated the system by setting up their camp nice and early, close to both the stages and their food right beside them, trust me its too good to be true..
This will happen…….
Only the experienced festival goers will know the sweet spot is to be nestled safely in amongst the mass of tents (preferably in the classic ring formation surrounded by your peers).
Here you will find strength in numbers….
2. Quick Shower
When we say shower we obviously don’t actually mean shower.. at all! Nothing about this is a shower!
Meet your new nest friend… Real showers are a thing of distant dreams, so carry shower wipes with you. Not only will you bluff cleanliness, you’ll feel better.
If you look less gross, you’ll feel less gross
3. Portable phone charger
Because your phone will die.
Especially if your ‘that guy’ who has to Snapchat everything, this tip is sure to keep your social media updates intact.
If you’re camping out, your phone will die. Not even flicking on airplane mode will get you through a whole weekend so take our word for it, if you don’t bring one you will buy one.
PS: Make sure its charged!
I know what your thinking “Just bring a pair of wellies?”. Unfortunately, its not that easy.. its never that easy.. Mother Nature is crafty. So be prepared!
A plastic bag…
… and duck tape…
= Rain shoes!
Function over Fashion, People!
5. Make wise clothing choices
Remember bare legs dry much faster than jeans
You might not enjoy having wet legs in a downpour but you’ll be glad you ditched the heavy denim when you dry off in no-time and your mates are left struggling with soaking jeans.
Heed our advice though – playing in the wet mud may seem like a great idea at the time but you will hate yourself once it starts drying and you can’t shower.
6. Get ahead of the Game!
Everyone knows being at the front of the crowd is where the speakers are loudest, view is the clearest and is therefore the best craic! So if you want to get the most out of the weekend, get to the stage good & early or… you could always just cheat your way to the front…
You’ll have to be more creative than the simple “excuse me”…
Pretend you’re lost someone..!
Where are you Michelle????
7. Don’t over plan
Failing to plan is planning to fail and all that, but E.P experts say it’s better to plan the main acts you want to see and go with the flow the rest of the time.
If two acts you want to see are playing back to back or worse, at the same time – stay organised! See both, half of two sets is so much better than missing one and regretting it.
8. Do find the quirky parts of the festival
Electric Picnic is about so much more than the music. There are all sorts of cool and unusual things to do from the Theatre of Food to the poetry slams, theatre stage, Irish language fun fair, Anachronica, the abandoned city in the woods…
9. Waterproof everything!
Black sacks are your best friend
Electric Picnic is in Ireland. Rain is in Ireland! If rain by some miracle ceases to fall during the festival it doesn’t count.
Everything will inevitably get wet, which means wrap and bag everything! Spare clothes, shoes, money, phone… If you can waterproof it, do it!
10. Use the buddy System!
It’s obvious. Don’t lose your friends! And what if you lose your phone? What if your phone stops working? Well… Refer to tip #1!
If its a thing you don’t want to brave the camping lifestyle and would much rather soft, cosy beds and hot showers. You can book a room in Abbeyleix Manor Hotel, which is just 25 mins from Electric Picnic.
